Since the Atlantic Police Academy (APA), a division of Holland College, opened its doors in 1971, thousands of law enforcement professionals, firefighters, and correctional officers have received the training they needed to enter and remain in the field. In addition to the Police Science (Cadet) program, the APA offers Basic Firefighting, Conservation Enforcement, Corrections, and Sheriff and Public Safety programs.
Some programs have a mandatory residence stipulation. Cadets in these programs must live in the APA residence in Slemon Park. The residential environment serves as a training lab in the same way as the driving track and firing range. The residence provides experiential learning that would not be possible if students interacted with one another in an instructional setting alone.
Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications, and for the development of attitudes such as gender and cross-cultural sensitivity that are essential to a successful career in the policing community.
