20 Turncoat Republicans Vote for Garland

The U.S. Senate voted today to confirm Merrick Garland as U.S. attorney general, and he’s likely to become the most anti-gun attorney general in the country’s history. Unbelievably, 20 turncoat Republicans voted in favor of President Joe Biden’s nominee, despite Garland’s strong stance in favor of all manners of restrictive gun control measures.

The 70-30 vote would have been dead even had the 20 Republican Senators, who claim to support the Second Amendment, cast an honest vote on the questionable nominee. In the end, however, they chose to throw their support behind the man now set to run Biden’s Justice Department, which includes heading up the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Republicans voting for Garland’s confirmation included Sens. Roy Blunt, Missouri; Richard Burr, North Carolina; Shelley Capito, Wyoming; Bill Cassidy, Louisiana; Susan Collins, Maine; John Cornyn, Texas; Joni Ernst, Iowa; Lindsay Graham, South Carolina; Charles Grassley, Iowa; Jim Inhofe, Oklahoma; James Lankford, Oklahoma; Mitch McConnell, Kentucky; Jerry Moran, Kansas; Lisa Murkowski, Alaska; Rob Portman, Ohio; Mitt Romney, Utah; Mike Rounds, South Dakota; John Thune, South Dakota; and Thom Tillis, North Carolina.

Many readers will remember Garland as then-President Barack Obama’s nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia upon his death back in February 2016. At that time, Garland’s anti-gun past—including his not believing the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms—fired up pro-gun advocates enough that they worked hard and killed the nomination.

Now, A mere five years later, Garland, who incidentally has labeled Republicans “terrorists” in the past, has somehow managed to capture the hearts and minds of some of those same Republican senators who sent him packing in the past. Unfortunately, that lack of backbone in representatives not voting their stated convictions doesn’t bode well for the future of the Second Amendment under the Biden administration.
